SCANDAL had begun to make certain stories seem capable of lasting for as long as their protagonists wanted them to. Twenty years, twelve albums, and still the same four musicians. No departure. No replacement.
On August 21, 2027, their 21st anniversary, the band will bring its activities to an end. HARUNA, MAMI, TOMOMI and RINA will play their final concert at Yokohama Arena.
The announcement came on August 24, three days after SCANDAL celebrated twenty years before an audience of nearly 10,000 at Osaka-jō Hall. The four musicians explained that they felt they had achieved everything they could achieve together. The decision was difficult. They discussed it, considered it, then made it as four.
They now have one year to give that ending a shape: 52 concerts across all 47 Japanese prefectures, from October 22, 2026 to May 1, 2027, followed by one final night in Yokohama.
An ending, without an announced breakup
The statement uses the expression 活動終了 (katsudō shūryō), meaning “the end of activities.” It is not 活動休止 (katsudō kyūshi), which would indicate a hiatus. Nor is it 解散 (kaisan), the word commonly used when a band formally disbands.
That distinction should be preserved without manufacturing hope that SCANDAL never offered. The musicians describe the tour as their “final journey” and promise to keep playing together until the final moment. Everything points towards a conclusion, even if the word “breakup” never appears.
There is no mention of conflict, or of one member wishing to continue under the same name with a different line-up. SCANDAL does not appear to be ending because its unity has failed. It is ending because all four members believe they have reached the end of what they wanted to experience under that name.
That may be what makes the announcement so difficult to absorb. Nothing broke. They simply decided that the journey needed a destination.
The world before their major-label debut
HARUNA, MAMI, TOMOMI and RINA met at a vocal and dance school in Osaka. When they formed SCANDAL in August 2006, they were still beginners with their instruments. They learnt together, rehearsed and began performing on the streets around Osaka Castle.
The wider world arrived quickly. In 2008, while the band was still signed to an independent label, SCANDAL performed in the United States, France and Hong Kong.
I was fortunate enough to work with them during their appearance at Japan Expo in July 2008. They were still a few months away from making their major-label debut with Epic Records Japan. I remember four young musicians who were remarkably focused, approaching every performance and every encounter with the same commitment, without yet fully realising how much space they would eventually occupy.
TOMOMI particularly impressed me. Her almost mischievous energy never distracted from the musician: she already had a distinct identity as a bassist and her own way of inhabiting the stage.
At that point, everything still had to be built. The audience was watching a group learn its profession at tremendous speed. We were witnessing the opening pages without knowing that the story would last twenty years.
“DOLL,” their first major-label single, arrived in October 2008. A few months later, 少女S (Shōjo S), selected as an opening theme for BLEACH, reached number six on Oricon’s weekly singles chart. 瞬間センチメンタル (Shunkan Sentimental), an ending theme for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, established SCANDAL with an even wider international audience.
Many listeners would remain at that doorway. Those who stepped through it found a discography that refused to fit inside a handful of anime themes.
Growing up in public
The uniforms of SCANDAL’s early years made the band instantly recognisable. They also threatened to trap the musicians inside the image of four Japanese schoolgirls photogenic enough to carry an effective pop-rock formula.
They had to prove that they were really playing. Then that they could improve. Then write, compose, decide and endure. The suspicions that might have reduced them to a product of their time became part of the momentum behind a career built in full public view.
Nippon Budokan came in 2012. In March 2013, SCANDAL finally reached Osaka-jō Hall, close to the park where the musicians had played their first street concerts. They would return several times, including on August 21, 2026, when nearly 10,000 people gathered to celebrate their twentieth anniversary.
In the meantime, the albums accumulated without retelling the same youthful story twelve times. BEST★SCANDAL, TEMPTATION BOX, STANDARD, HELLO WORLD, YELLOW and HONEY accompanied the band’s transformation. The musicians took greater control of the writing and composition. They did not reject their beginnings; they simply stopped asking them for permission to move forward.
The launch of their private label her in 2019 gave them a more independent framework. SCANDAL released Kiss from the darkness in 2020, MIRROR in 2022, LUMINOUS in 2024 and then ECHO, their twelfth album, in May 2026.
Throughout those years, the band continued touring across Asia, Europe and North America. In 2017, SCANDAL completed its first tour of all 47 Japanese prefectures. Ten years later, the band will travel that route again to say goodbye.
Twenty years, four musicians
On August 21, 2023, Guinness World Records recognised SCANDAL as the longest-running female rock band with the same musicians.
The record is impressive because it is measured in years. Its true scale lies elsewhere.
HARUNA, MAMI, TOMOMI and RINA began as teenagers. Together, they moved into adulthood, faced changes across the music industry, travelled the world and lived through the kind of success that can restrict an artist as easily as it can set them free. They also endured the years when continuing required something stronger than the excitement of a new beginning.
The line-up never changed. Their music, responsibilities and lives obviously did.
SCANDAL could have survived a departure. Many bands have. Replacing any one of these four musicians, however, would probably have created something else. That is an interpretation, not a reason stated in the announcement. It nevertheless helps explain how SCANDAL can end its activities without its members ever using the word “breakup.”
The final tour will begin at LIQUIDROOM in Tokyo on October 22, 2026. It will conclude at Zepp DiverCity on May 1, 2027, after 52 concerts. Yokohama Arena will follow on August 21.
They began as four around Osaka Castle. They travelled together for twenty years without leaving anyone behind. They will finish the same way.
