55 RED arrives today, September 1, 2026, almost a year after 大黒摩季 (Maki Ohguro) first took several of its songs on tour. The album shares its release date with 55 BLACK RETURNS, a new edition of her 2025 rock album accompanied by its final concert.
The two parts of a project conceived around Ohguro’s 55th birthday can finally sit side by side.
Black does not blend
Ohguro describes black as a color that covers everything without properly mixing with anything else. She placed her stubbornness, anger and loneliness there, together with the rock she considers her backbone. 55 BLACK was built around that direct and sometimes still adolescent part of her personality. Her “Ohgurock.”
Red makes room for her wider musical interests. Ohguro associates it with vulnerability, sensuality and inner passion, but also with her appetite for mixing genres. The official presentation of 55 RED promises a musical journey led by flamenco and passing through salsa, bossa nova, reggae, chill and tribal sounds.
The album contains twelve songs and a bonus track. Some, including “Mira mira mira,” “Cacao de Salsa” (カカオ de サルサ) and “SHINE ON ME☆,” were introduced before the release. Its BIG Edition includes the final concert of the 2025 55 RED tour, filmed at the Tokyo International Forum.
This is Ohguro’s description of the album, not our verdict on music released today. It does, however, explain why 55 RED belongs next to 55 BLACK: both record how she chose to define herself at 55.
Six hits do not make a life
“DA・KA・RA” (ダ・カ・ラ), “Chotto” (チョット), “Anata dake Mitsumeteru” (あなた だけ見つめてる), “Natsu ga Kuru” (夏が来る), “Atsuku Nare” (熱くなれ) and “La La La” (ら・ら・ら) established Maki Ohguro as one of the defining voices of Japanese pop music in the 1990s.
Those songs still occupy a central place in her concerts. They explain why her 35th-anniversary campaign carries weight, but a career cannot remain trapped between 1992 and 1996.
That is where these releases become relevant. 55 BLACK RETURNS places her rock foundations beside the repertoire that made her famous. 55 RED introduces the other part of the project through new music first developed on stage. The anniversary provides the occasion; Ohguro remains concerned with the artist she is now.
