Tokyo after dark, seen from the expressway. That is the image behind “C1 (Tokyo Inner Loop),” a single released on August 21, 2026 by Japanese instrumental group ROUTE14band.
Inspired by Tokyo’s Inner Circular Route, the piece takes a nighttime drive through the capital as its starting point. At its center is trumpeter 山崎千裕 (Chihiro Yamazaki), whose group describes its approach as “Singing Instruments”: letting instruments carry the expressive role of the human voice.
What makes “C1 (Tokyo Inner Loop)” particularly enjoyable is the lightness of its pop sensibility within the jazz-fusion sound. Its bright, melodic energy evokes classic city pop and some of the most memorable instrumental passages of the City Hunter soundtrack. It captures the spirit of Tokyo jazz fusion: lively, sophisticated and effortlessly accessible.
Founded in 2010, ROUTE14band draws on Japan’s long tradition of jazz-fusion while bringing its instrumental music to international stages, including repeated appearances at SXSW.
“C1 (Tokyo Inner Loop)” also appears on 24 No Limit, the group’s seven-track album released physically in September 2026. From the midnight expressway to other hours of the day, the album extends the journey suggested by the single.
